Acer Aspire 5951G Failed BIOS Update (won't boot / Black Screen / No POST)

Version 1.04 to 1.11 upgrade using the Windows EXE.

After a lot of researching (close to 2 hours) I was able to fix the corruption using the following process.

  1. You will need a USB drive reformat with FAT (not FAT32 or xFAT)
  2. Then you need to go to the ACER website and download a bios file. I used the same failed version 1.11 but any should work.
  3. Once downloaded, extract the file using the WinRAR self-extracting version supplied with the BIOS.
  4. Then expand the extracted files.

To do this run the BIOS EXE the first time to extract and then run again then browse to the extracted files.  Open the extracted folder and then open the "windows" folder. Right click on the application file (.exe) and press extract here. This expands the EXE.

  1. You now want to copy the file called ZRH.fd onto the USB drive.
  2. Plug the USB drive
  3. Holding FN and ESC, press the power button on your 5951G. The power button should flash if done correctly.  After around 30 seconds the USB drive should show activity.   After a few minutes the system should reboot and display POST.

Thank you so very much this worked like a charm! I had to wait around 5 minutes for mine to work which worried me but just be patient and this will work as long as you follow instructions exactly! Also, it DOES work if you reformat to FAT32 ;)

Hello,
i have the same problem.
i tried your way, but it didn't work :(

i formated my usb stick to FAT.
i downloaded the BIOS Version 1.13 from the acer-homepage.
i extrakt the file and then i extrakt the ZRH_113W-File in the windows folder
i copied the ZTH.fd File on the USB Stick.

Then i put it into my notebook.
then i press FN+ESC and the Power Button.

After all the Power Button flashes regulary, but the USB Stick did nothing.

it will be awesome if somebody can help me!!! i'm really desperate!

This works only when your BIOS is still bootable, for example on Acer Aspire 5739G I have more serious issues, BIOS update failed and laptop doesn't boot it just checks all I/O devices and when screen flashes it resets itself and does same procedure again and again. If you insert flash drive it check it as well, but then resets itself again, done with wincrisis.exe made USB Stick under 4GB, did with just adding BIN and WHF files. Nothing worked, it doesn't even start to read anything. Devices aren't even initialised everything is just checked, which inputs are used. So one way or another I've ordered preflashed with latest BIOS, Bios chips specificly for my laptop. So now what is left to remove upper panel and resolder the chip.

Thank you very much. This worked for me with 5951G and USB stick formatted to FAT32. By the way: before I tried your process, the assholes on Acer hotline told me, the only way to fix failed BIOS update is to send my laptop to Acer service.
